Ancient Egypt is one of the most interesting times and places in all of history. Almost all school children study ancient Egyptian culture at one time or another, and almost all of them fall in love with it. After all, how could you not? Ancient Egypt had some of the most spectacular art works ever, and a fascinating civilization besides. Of course, if you want to get the full feel for ancient Egypt, you do have to go and see the relics themselves. The best place is modern Egypt You can see ancient Egyptian artifacts in almost any museum in the world, but nothing beats the splendor of the pyramids or the majesty of the sphinx with its endless and impassive stare. Many of the best ancient Egypt relics were kept near where they were found, and many others were later returned to their rightful guardians, the people of modern Egypt. Then again, there are quite a few ancient Egypt artifacts to be seen outside of the country itself. One of the most spectacular examples is the temple of Dendor in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It is a full reconstruction of an ancient Egyptian temple taken, piece by piece, and meticulously preserved. You can even walk into it and look around if you want to. It is in a lovely room with a still pool and a view of the middle of central park in one window. All in all, a great display in one of the greatest cities. Other museum pieces from ancient Egypt are less substantial, but no less impressive. The mummies and sarcophagi are, of course, a sight to behold, but even the smaller pieces are pretty neat. Egyptian hieroglyphics with their vivid and strangely stylized figures can be quite interesting to anyone interested in language or art. And even the small little artifacts from daily life – the scarab beetle necklaces, the tools and the ornaments – can create quite a dramatic impression, particularly when vividly displayed in museum cases. In my humble opinion, the very best way for you to really enjoy ancient Egypt is alongside other civilizations. Looking at ancient Greek art, African tribal masks, and other images of antiquity will really give you a framework to compare and contrast. The more ancient art you see, the more vivid a picture you will have of the ancient world. And the more vivid your image of the ancient world, the better you will understand the modern day. |
