Boston, Massachusetts is no stranger to culture and entertainment and the Boston Opera House is a much-valued venue, offering a variety of productions. The original premises suffered from a lack of repair and maintenance and was eventually demolished. The present building on Washington Street, in the midst of the Theatre District, opened in 1928. Disaster struck in 1991 when the theatre was severely flooded. $30 million was raised for a major renovation, bringing back the Boston Opera House to its former glory. A campaign, spearheaded by local Senator Edward Kennedy and others, was successful in registering the venue as a National Landmark. The theatre re-opened in 2004 and has enjoyed commercial success ever since. Despite its name, the theatre only presents opera productions on occasion. Previous shows and concerts have showcased famous performers and there is something for everyone to enjoy each year at the Boston Opera House. Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals have been very popular here with productions of Cats and Phantom of the Opera. Family shows, such as The Lion King and Dora the Explorer keep the kids entertained. Magic has been supplied by David Copperfield and pop music has been represented by Van Morrison, The White Stripes and soul diva Aretha Franklin. A yearly tradition takes place when the Boston Ballet Company performs The Nutcracker. This family favorite can be seen from Thanksgiving until New Year. It is the perfect presentation for the surroundings and gains new fans each year. The 2008 schedule continues the popularity of the venue. The year opened with comedy and Monty Python's Spamalot, followed by old favorite My Fair Lady. This was followed by a K.D Lang concert and a show with Bill Cosby. Upcoming shows feature the return of magician, David Copperfield and another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. It has been announced that Jesus Christ Superstar, co-written with lyricist Tim Rice, will start in May for a twelve month run. The theatre is a success because of the variety it offers, appealing to all sections of the audience and all members of the family. The presentations cater to the traditional and the contemporary. The Boston Opera House is in fact, just one reason to visit the city. There are many attractions and the availability of first class hotels and restaurants make Boston a must visit destination. There are several top hotels in the Theatre District, including well-known chains, such as Hyatt Regency, Marriott and Hilton. |
